A Thing I Don’t Understand About the World

The world we live in is leaving me in an increasingly hopeless state of mind. With the American President Elect winning on the basis of blatant racism, the Brexit passing on the basis of racism and the rise of the war against Islam, I feel a mixture of sadness, confusion and anger. This prompts me to think long and hard about the state of the world. The outcome? I’ll simply say that I do not understand.

I cannot understand racism, and whatever ‘fundamental level’ of racism people claim to have embedded in them from the moment they exit the womb. The concept makes no sense to me. How upsetting it is that racists project their behaviour on everybody else by saying it’s ‘natural’, just to justify their gross behaviour.

Speaking of fundamental beliefs: a belief of mine is that love is what keeps the world spinning on its axis, what keeps people moving and breathing – no matter how cliché that sounds. And so, I just don’t understand why people want to stop that. Maybe I’m seeing it in black and white here, but racism is what’s stopping us progressing as people, as a people. All of this racism is simply life-threatening idiocy.

The world, as I see it, is just one big experience. There is so much to see, so much to do and so much to experience. How could you hate another person so deeply because of where they’re from and the language they speak? If you’re honestly going to deny yourself the brilliance of adventure and experience because of racist beliefs, then I pity you and your small mind. I really, really do.
